Since as long as I can remember, I have always wanted to go downtown Vancouver on Christmas Day and hand out Christmas presents. A few of us would drive down, maybe my brother and I and a couple of friends, and spend Christmas on the streets—visiting, exchanging story for story. It was only an idea, though. I was young and my ideas seemed to come on too grand of a scale, in fact they might still. In any case, I didn’t share my passion about what I thought would be the best Christmas ever; that is, until October…

On April 12, 57 people attended a meet-n-greet question and answer session with the Canonese pastoral candidate Felix Lim and his wife Sue Lim. From the meeting, ECBC was able to get to know the Lim family better. Felix met Sue 25 years ago, were married in 1989 and have one son. They celebrate their 20th anniversary this year. Since they have been together, they often see that school and work as a part time event, while service work for God as full time work.

Hi, my name is Dung Ha. Before coming to church, I didn't know anything about Jesus. I didn't believe in anything. Everyone in this church is friendly. A lot of people here were willing to teach me and encourage me to come to church more often. As I come to church more and more, I get to learn a lot of stuff about Jesus. How HE did all these great things to help everyone and how he died on the cross to save us.

I wouldn't say my life was perfect before I came to know God, but I can say that it was pretty good. My parents, my sister, my cousins, my aunts and uncles were wonderful, loving people who were willing to support me and they still are. I had good friends and I even excelled in school. My parents took me on vacation every year and I got to see the world, from Hawaii to Europe to China. So what's to complain? How did I come to know God?

Being highly involved in service ministry such as participating in Mustard Seed and Habitat for Humanity outreach, there's no other person more fitting to be the Outreach Servant Leader than Mel Duong. It wasn't until she was 20 years of age when she accepted Christ as Lord and Saviour. Although she is a relatively young Christian, she has lived Apostle Paul's advice to not let anyone look down on her due to her age. |

At the ECBC special members' meeting today, the vote on the motion to accept English pastoral candidate Reverend Dennis Milne was passed. After over six months without a permanent English pastor, the vote heralded good news to the English congregation as the full-time pastor will be able to continue in the same direction that Reverend Tawa Anderson has left.

Members of ECBCs Grace Fellowship helped to serve a Chinese lunch at Baptist Student Ministrie's weekly Loonie Lunch at the University of Alberta Campus on Wednesday, February 11th. After several hours of preparation, cooking, and coordination, the senior fellowship at ECBC brought a delightful menu to a few outreach and value conscious students. The menu consisted of Asian chicken chow mein, a side of pan-fried pork dumplings, and a blueberry muffin dessert with jasmine tea beverage.

The theme verse for the 2009 ECBC church theme 'Growing in Christ' is taken from 2 Peter 3:18 and is written in the New International Version, "But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen." Related verses include Luke 2:52; 2 Peter 1:3-11; Ephesians 4:11-16; Colossians 1:23, 2:7; and Hebrews 6:1-3.

Felix Lim spoke about the theme of Exile at ECBC Sunday, January 4th as the congregation was moved from the pews to the stage for the worship service. Felix discussed many examples of exile and how God works in times of exodus or exile. The first service of 2009 refreshed the congregation as the worship leader organised an intimate gathering without the use of microphones or computer projections and reverted back to the hymnbook for much of the songs. Coincedentally, the relocation from the pews to the stage fit in with the exile message of the sermon.

On this, the 2008th year of our Lord, we bid farewell to another wondeful year God has worked at ECBC. In general news around the world, 2008 was a year of change and overcoming the adversity and hardship. At ECBC, it was a similar story of change and challenges as timekeepers at the Royal Observatory of Greenwich added a 'leap second' to 2008 to make it the longest year since 1992. Here are the top ten highlights of the ECBC English congregation in 2008.
