Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.
Philippians 2:4
We have been given so much. We are fortunate to be living in a prosperous, affluent society. And most of us have been blessed to be born into middle-class families. But as Christians, we are called not to be selfish, not to look after #1 - but rather to serve the needs of others. To this end, we encourage members to take part in opportunities to serve the needs of others in our community & city through partnering with various organizations.
Big Brothers & Big Sisters (BBBS) of Edmonton
Big Brothers & Big Sisters serve the needs of Little Brothers & Sisters between the ages of 6-18 who are seeking a mentor (positive older role model & teacher). Most little brothers & sisters come from single-parent families, or live with other relatives or friends or in foster care.
Opportunities to serve as a mentor with BBBS include as an in-school mentor (1 hour per week in a particular school - primarily intended for post-secondary students to do literacy tutoring with children); a Big Brother/Big Sister mentor (2-4 hours per week in your own home). For other volunteer opportunities, check their web site, or email bbbs@bbbsedmonton.org.
Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave - just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.
Matthew 20:26-28
