Servant Leader Series: Mel Duong
Being highly involved in service ministry such as participating in Mustard Seed and Habitat for Humanity outreach, there's no other person more fitting to be the Outreach Servant Leader than Mel Duong. She convocates this year from UofA in spring and is currently studying molecular genetics.
She grew up in a Buddhist home and learned about Christianity when she was about 13 and have been trying to convince her mother to have a younger sister since she has two brothers. It wasn't until she was 20 years of age when she accepted Christ as Lord and Saviour, and received baptism a year later. Although she is a relatively young Christian, she has lived Apostle Paul's advice to not let anyone look down on her due to her age.
Mel Duong involved with Project Porchlight last fall.
As the Outreach Servant leader returning for her last year, her role is to train herself and others in reaching out to those who have not yet heard or accepted the truth of Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection in exchange for God's forgiveness of our sins. This includes organizing outreach events where our church can serve others, organizing/fundraising for short term missions, and encouraging/providing evangelism training. In consideration of this year's church theme, 'Growing in Christ', she adds that this year, she hopes to meet more often with the Outreach committee and have book/Bible studies to build up our relationship with one another and to help each other grow in our relationship with Christ.
When asked if she could switch roles with another servant leaders, which one she would consider, she answers contemplatively with "Hmmm." She adds, "That's a good question. Unfortunately I have no definite answer. I would try my best in whatever role God calls me too. I know which servant leader role I am probably NOT gifted in though and that would be worship."
Discussing more seriously, in regards to what she has experienced and learned over the last couple years as servant leader, she feels that serving as servant leader in the past has definitely challenged her to grow up and become a leader instead of a follower which is what she is more comfortable doing now. She is still learning to be more bold in her faith and leadership, with Christ to lead her on. Tawa had reminded her to trust in the ability of God instead of herself when she was first asked to fulfill my SL role. She states that, "I have learned how to speak in front of a public audience about my faith more in the past 2 years as a servant leader than I would have ever thought."
Serving also in the renovation committee and the Outreach Vision Team, she would like to have the vision team continue to serve the community around the area of our church as well as Edmonton's inner-city but to focus more on how we can serve the people that are already a part of our everyday lives (friends, family, co-workers) and how we can play our part in leading them to Christ.
To close off, she has found 1 Peter 3:15 as an inspiring passage in her position, "But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect."
